DCAPS and Foundation

Another important phase at Transvalia School for Learners with Special Educational Needs is the DCAPS Phase (Differentiated CAPS), which caters for learners with
severe intellectual disabilities. This phase currently accommodates approximately 50 learners divided into five classes, allowing for smaller groups and more
individualised support. The DCAPS curriculum is specifically adapted to meet the learning needs and pace of the learners, with learners taking two years to complete
a grade. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on practical learning, consisting of approximately 80% practical work and 20% written tasks and activities.

During the first part of the school day, learners focus on academic subjects such as Home Language, Functional Additional Language, Mathematics, Natural Sciences
and Life Skills. During the second part of the day, senior learners participate in skills-based subjects including Agricultural Studies, Cooking, and Arts and Crafts. Senior learners are also involved in the school-to-work programme, also known as the exit programme, which aims to prepare learners for the workplace and greater
independence after leaving school.

As part of this programme, learners gain practical work experience by assisting in the hostel kitchen, helping with gardening and maintenance on the school premises, and participating in other meaningful daily responsibilities that develop valuable life and work skills.
